Kickboxercise

What sort of stuff will I learn?

You’ll start with fitness training aimed at conditioning the body, strengthening it as well as improving stamina and endurance. We will teach you the simplest techniques e.g., defence against someone kicking you or punching you (the most common attacks seen on the street).

We will also teach you how to position yourself correctly, fighting stance, followed by Norwood Community Group Services learning how to punch and kick correctly. As you progress, you’ll learn more techniques according to abilities. You’ll eventually be able to do some quite spectacular techniques.

Who takes up Fitness/Self-defence training?

You do hopefully! There is no one type who trains at our school. We tend to attract people who want to get fit, learn self-defence, meet new people and have fun. The average age of the club is 8 upwards to mid-teens, though the age range varies considerably. We have roughly as many young boys and young girls in attendance.

Mentor/Support: Our ethos is to support/mentor those young people who attend our projects, we have trained mentors on the ground, who will listen and support those young people who need it.

I’m really unfit – does this matter?

No, Training is geared towards what you personally can do so you don’t need to be fit to start. You will certainly get fit through regular training; the class consists of circuit training which means you will put through different tasks in a circuit of disciplines for I minute.

Does it hurt?

It depends on each individual’s body condition. We encourage all students to do as much as they can, ‘practice makes perfect’, no one is pushed beyond their capabilities and we always asses each young person before putting them through training. If you’re not at a high fitness level, then you are likely to ache a day or two after your first session but this vanishes as you continue to train. To date, we have had no serious injuries and all students are supervisors in a controlled learning environment.
