Positive Parenting
Norwood Community Group Services is pleased to announce its involvement as a community partner in facilitating Families and Schools Together (FAST) workshops to support parents in Lambeth. We are also facilitators in the Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities parent programme.
Education
Everything a parent needs to know about the school education system
In Lambeth, it is the expectation that only 50% of children will leave school with 5 GCSEs and in BME communities. This percentage decreases to 30% meaning that after 11 years of statutory education 70% of BME children will leave mainstream statutory education without the full ability to read, write and be able to apply basic mathematic principles.
This course will equip all parents with tools to monitor their child’s progress in the British education system.
Course objectives:
To equip parents with the knowledge to understand school attainment grades and how the school will make a prediction on your child’s success at Year 7
How to work with the school to improve your child’s prospects through independent study and positive parenting practice
How to implement structure and goal setting to support your child’s progress through school.
Single Parenting
Single parenting is different than when you have two parents to help raise a child. There is more stress on the parent and thus there is more stress that follows down to the child. A single parent requires support and strategies to cope with the everyday demands and stresses of modern day child rearing within modern day society.
Course objectives:
Discuss issues and barriers single parents have to face
Explore strategies to help the child to succeed in school and at home
Explore strategies to support parents cope with demands of single parenting.
Fathers
Statistics in Lambeth paint the picture that a large number of children are growing up without the involvement of fathers in their lives. This session will explore the importance of being in a principal role in your child’s life, exploring the social, emotional and educational benefits of having a dad that cares and will provide a network forum for dads to exchange ideas, support and inspire each other to make a positive difference in their child’s life.
Course objectives:
Illustrate the powerful influence dads have on their kids and their families, whether Dad is awesome, absent, or anything in between
Evaluate how effectively fathers currently engage with their children
Provide basic principles for being a dad, not just a father
Inspire fathers to step up and be involved in their children’s education
