17th April 2013
‘TOPPING OUT’ CEREMONY OFFERS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR WEST NORWOOD
Jamal Rahman, a local resident and Chief Executive Officer at Norwood Community Group Services, attended the ‘Topping Out’ Ceremony held yesterday, Wednesday 16th April, at the site off Knight’s Hill, along with other invited guests, to mark the completion of the outer shell of the new £14.2 million leisure and health centre in West Norwood that is scheduled to open in Spring next year.
Speeches were delivered by Guests of honour, Cllr Peck (Leader of Lambeth Council), Dr Adrian McLachlan, (Chair of Lambeth Commissioning Group), Professor Stephen Dunne, (Kings College London).
The West Norwood development is being built on the site of the former Norwood Hall, which was demolished last summer and had not been used since 1997. The one to four-storey building will consist of 25m pool, fitness suite with 100 work stations and dance studio, local GP Practice, dentistry services (ran by King’s College London offering free dentry care), a Lambeth council customer service point and community room.
“It was an honour to be invited to see the phase of the building project, which will be of huge benefit to local residents. We hope that NCGS will be able to work in partnership with the Centre that will bring employment opportunities to the community”, said Jamal Rahman.
Local Councillor Jackie Meldrum who spearheaded the event said: “This will make a huge difference to the people who live and work in West Norwood. Aside from the health benefits they will be able to take from having a sports centre so close to home, we hope to see benefits to trade and local businesses from those using the centre”.
The development is a public-private partnership between Lambeth council, NHS Lambeth, developer Building Better Health (part of the Fulcrum Group) and Galliford Try Partnership – the main contractor. The architects RIBA-nominated Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
